Andy Murray's infamous X-ray cock-up image turned into brilliant advertising campaign

Andy Murray on court

Remember the 2019 story about Andy Murray and the Instagram X-ray cock-up? Well, that X-ray has been turned into a brilliant advertising campaign, although with a minor tweak.

Let’s refresh your memory.

Just over four years ago former world No 1 Murray underwent hip resurfacing surgery in London and he made the announcement on Instagram with the post accompanied by an image of his X-ray.

All good so far.

However, social media users rarely miss a beat when it comes to doing their own X-rays of images and they soon spotted Murray’s “pork sword” on the photo.

Cue some brilliant replies with one writing: “Speedy recovery, happy you’re out of pain and congrats on the pork sword.”

Another added: “Wonder if any one realised you could see @andy_murray twig and giggle berries on the hip replacement x ray. anyway andy murrary wish you a speedy recovery.”

“Is it just me or can i see his dingle dangle outlined there!?” was another comment.

After the surgery there were questions about his future as many feared he would not be able to play competitively again at the highest level with a metal hip.

Murray, though, has proven the naysayers wrong as he won the European Open just nine months after the operation and his rise back to the top has not stopped as this year he has won three ATP Challenger Tour titles and moved back into the top 40 of the ATP Rankings for the first time in five years.

And his recent success, his sponsor Castore has used that infamous X-ray as an advertising campaign on the London Underground and on social media, but they did leave out an important part.

The X-ray of his lower torso is plastered on the London Underground with the words “Better Never Stops”, but his “pork sword” no longer visible.

The social media post adds: “Just nine months after his career-saving right hip surgery, Andy Murray was victorious at the European Open in Antwerp in 2019 – for his 46th ATP Tour Level Title.

“Following his two title wins on the grass-courts at Surbiton and Nottingham last month, Andy kicks off his bid for a third Wimbledon title tomorrow, Better Never Stops.”

And “Better” didn’t stop on Tuesday as Murray won his 2023 Wimbledon opener against Ryan Peniston on Tuesday.
